Nonresidential building led U.S. construction starts during the first half of the year, increasing 6 percent compared to the first half of 2016, according to a report from Dodge Data & Analytics. Within the segment, institutional building is up 11 percent and commercial starts have remained steady. Residential construction starts remained unchanged in the first six months, compared to the same period in 2016. Within the segment, single-family increase 8 percent year-over-year. However, multifamily fell 18 percent compared to the first six months of 2016.
Overall U.S. construction starts were down 4 percent year-over-year the first six months. The decline is primarily due to a fallout of the nonbuilding market, which was down 22 percent in the first half of 2017 compared to year-ago levels, according to the report.
