Glass Expo Northeast (GENE™) opened today at the Hyatt Regency Long Island at the Wind Watch Hotel & Golf Club in Hauppauge, N.Y. The two-day educational event, which includes an extensive seminar program as well as a trade show, runs through tomorrow.
Today's seminar sessions focused on a range of topics, and began with a presentation on one of today's hottest markets-security products. John Pearson with Dlubak Corp. and Lewis Pitzer of American Standard Window Films told a full-house audience how to understand and sell these products.
That was followed by another hot topic, building information modeling (BIM). Joel Kaskela of LTS Drafting & Engineering discussed what BIM is and how it works. He said that, going forward, a BIM submittal will become mandatory on a project, although now it is being used mainly for institutional and large projects.
"It obviously adds time and money up front on projects, but it avoids a lot of headaches down the road," he told attendees.
Helen Sanders of SAGE Electrochromics talked about electronically tintable glass, which is glass that can be altered when an electric current is passed over it, and followed up with project examples utilizing the product. She pointed out the impact that dynamic glass and design trends are having on contract glazing and the role that codes play in this.
"Don't ignore codes because they can impact your business over night," she told attendees.
The afternoon educational program got underway with an overview of the contract glazing industry in the Northeast by Deb Levy, publisher of USGlass magazine/USGNN.com™. Her presentation included information that the magazine gathered through a survey of its readers in the Northeast.
The afternoon's educational program was rounded out with YKK AP America's AIA seminar presentation, "Proper Applications of Storefront, Window Walls & Curtainwalls" by the company's Tom Cross and Anthony Intintoli, and a session on how to properly apply mirrors by Michael O'Sullivan of Hampton Glass and Mirror.
Registration was brisk all day. The trade show floor was brisk and attendees had a chance to see a variety of offerings from the more than 50 exhibitors taking part in the event.
The seminars and the show continue through tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The weather is supposed to be spectacular on Long Island tomorrow, so head for the Hyatt Regency and see what GENE can do for your business and your bottom line.
