The 7th edition of the PCD congress-exhibition, held on the 8th and 9th February 2011 at the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie, Paris, closed with the PCD Awards ceremony. Twelve Prizes were awarded before an audience of enthusiastic professionals.
The PCD Awards, the 2011 PCD closing ceremony, highlighted « Packaging Innovations » and « Complimentarity – Formulation – Packaging Compatibility « . To compete, products had to be placed on the European market between the 1st December 2009 and the 31st December 2010. Prizes were awarded by an independent Jury (see list below) made up of journalists and packaging experts in the field of Perfumes and Cosmetics. This year, major technological innovations and new forms of handling were highlighted.
The PCD 2011 Award-Winners:
« Bleu » Shower Gel, Chanel – Care Category
Equally elegant and totally consistent with the Bleu perfume, the Chanel shower gel appealed to jury members owing to its flip top and easy handling. No more caps trailing in the bathroom!
The flip top was manufactured by SAF. Pinard created the bottle. The case and wavy pattern come from Wauters / Nicollet.
« Terracotta 4 Seasons » Powder, Guerlain – Make-up Category
The original idea according to which authenticity and luxury should be expressed by a powder was embodied in the Ora Ito design. The refined shape and transparent dome of the object dwarfed other entries. From a technical stance, the base is a single, overmolded block; the top (complex part of the case) is made up of 5 components. Finally, a ring holds the system together. The Guerlain teams wished to thank Albéa, their supplier.
« Wanted Rouge » Lipstick, Helena Rubinstein – Make-up Category
Achieve irresistible attraction in a click. That was the idea formulated by the Helena Rubinstein marketing teams. Pushing the press top to release the tube of red lipstick was deemed a very elegant new form of handling, which the jury wished to reward. Cosfibel is one of the suppliers thanked.
« Lash Queen Sexy Blacks » Mascara, Helena Rubinstein – Make-up Category
The Helena Rubinstein teams are used to creating make-up products that resemble jewels. The award-winning mascara proves this point. Shapely garbed in black lace, the tube is as sexy as product communication would have us believe : « uplift volume, provocative curves, sexy corset ». Yet decorating the tube proved a major challenge for the technical team : the lace was produced by Seidel and its partners using silkscreen techniques rounded off by flocking.
« Voyage » Perfume, Hermès – Men's and Unisex Perfume Category
The design is signed by Philippe Mouquet. He drew inspiration from a pocket magnifying glass to create the object. The technical difficulty, an unprecedented challenge, consisted in making a stirrup turn around a glass bottle. The solution was found by creating a virtual axis in 2 mm aluminium in an indent in the bottle. The bottle can, moreover, be refilled.
The following suppliers/partners were thanked : SGD and Verreries Pochet et du Courval (glass), Pivaudran (drawing), Ipack (injection and assembly) and CNP Vaudreil (packaging).
« Fleur de cristal » Perfume, Lalique – Women's Perfume Category
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of René Lalique, the teams of this renowned firm decided to use lily-of-the-valley, a symbol of renewal that fascinated the creator. The challenge consisted in suspending its little bells in the upper segment of the bottle. This bottle with pure lines in which the flowers seem to float fully meets the challenge. Not a single injection point is visible.
Thanks go to Pochet (for the glass), VPI (surlyn shoulder segment), Rexam (pump) and Cartondruck (cardboard).
« L’air du Temps » Perfume, Nina Ricci – Collector Category
A hand-blown Lalique bottle embodies the award-winning perfume. It was specially created for the 60th anniversary of the iconic Nina Ricci line , « Air du temps ». Its design is a real technical feat : difficulty controling the thickness and cooling of the black glass, first box in cardboard covered by shiny vinyl, second box in black lacquer wood with a satin interior, hot stamping, etc. Altogether, the various steps to create a single collector perfume would take half a day. The jury was overwhelmed by so many achievements. « L’air du Temps » collector by Nina Ricci will go down in the history of PCD Awards.
C Group /LF Beauty (lacquer wood box), ECR1 (protection box) and Lalique were warmly thanked.
