CORPUS CHRISTI — Volunteers collected nearly 11 tons of glass during a glass recycling event this past Saturday.
Organizers called the event a success and said it will continue on a quarterly schedule. The next collection date is May 21 at the Walmart in Calallen.
During the event Saturday, organizers said about 300 residents dropped off glass containers at a Walmart store at Everhart Road and South Padre Island Drive.
"We are extremely happy with the level of participation we saw for this event," Solid Waste Director Lawrence Mikolajczyk said in a city issued news release. "This shows the strong desire that many of our residents have to recycle glass products and to keep our community litter free."
The city discontinued glass recycling in 2005 because there was no market for it. Since then the city has received calls from the public to reinstate the program. The Corpus Christi Clean City Advisory Committee took up the issue several of months ago and voted to organize an quarterly collection event.
More than 25 volunteers from the Flint Hills Resources Community Action Council, Beautify Corpus Christi, the Clean Economy Coalition and Advanced Temporary Solutions participated this past Saturday.
