Pittsburgh Glass Works (PGW)’s new plant in Elkin, N.C., to be opened next year, will begin with manufacturing tempered parts only, and eventually will make windshields as well, according to company spokesperson Robert McCullough. The company announced yesterday it would be investing $85 million to convert an existing facility in Elkin into a plant to open in 2012.
McCullough says the company made the decision to invest in a new plant due to an increased demand for auto glass. “It’s primarily in the OEM [market],”“I think if you look at the [manufacturing] numbers in general they’re up from what they had been over the last year or two.”
McCullough declined to comment on what specific manufacturers will be served by the new plant. “It probably will be a variety,” he says. “We still haven’t sorted through all that.”
And what made the new location attractive for the company? “A combination of logistics, incentives both at the state and local level, and a good workforce available,” says McCullough.
