TAIPEI, May 5 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks extended gains in late trading and closed up 0.8 percent on Thursday, supported by a jump in glass makers and electronics shares, but fund managers
said the main share index was still likely to see pressure ahead.
The main TAIEX index was up 71.26 points at 9,018.61, after opening down 0.19 percent.
Shinkong Investment Trust Vice-President Robert Hsieh expected Taiwan shares would consolidate slightly before climbing up again.
"Commodities and markets in other regions are also retreating from the previous hike now."
The glass and ceramics sub-index was the top gainer, surging 6.1 percent, while electronics shares climbed 0.99 percent. Financial counters also rose 0.73 percent. Cement and department store counters were the biggest losers, falling 1.37 percent and 1 percent, respectively.
The Taiwan dollar gained 0.23 percent to T$28.605. Foreign investors snapped a nine-session buying streak on Wednesday and became net sellers, offloading T$8.63 billion
($302.07 million).
