The shipments of Taiwan-based large-size TFT LCD panels (above 9-inch, including panels for tablet devices) in second quarter 2011 was 70.72 million units, showing an on-quarter growth of 8.5% and on-year growth of 0.8%. The growth would be negative if the figure excludes shipments of tablet device panels. The capacity utilization of South Korea-based panel makers was affected by the adjustments to production process, however, the firms have regain the strength hence the global market share of Taiwan-based large-size panel makers will decrease to 39.1%.
The growth of panels for tablet devices showed the largest growth. Hannstar's 10-inch panels have been aiming at white-box devices in China, therefore, it is difficult to determine the end use for its shipments. Overall, the total shipment of tablet device panels from AU Optronics (AUO), Chimei Innolux (CMI) and HannStar showed more than 300% of on-quarter growth. The tablet device panels accounted for approximately 10.8% of total large-size panel shipments in second quarter for Taiwan-based firms. Panels for tablet devices has become the segment of the market that firms began to focus on.
The shipments of Taiwan-based panels for monitors showed a slight on-quarter growth of 4.5% in second quarter 2011. However, CMI reached double-digit growth means the market share of large-size panels for AUO has been decreasing. The global sales of LCD TV have been less than expected, but the sales in China's market showed on-quarter growth plus Japan-based LCD TV firms increased the percentage of OED all contributed to CMI's increase in shipments for TV panels.
Overall, CMI outperformed AUO and Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT) in growth of total shipments for large-size panels such as panels for monitors and TVs in second quarter. AUO excelled in shipments of panels for tablet devices and notebooks.
