The Wanganui is known as a centre of excellence in glass and soon it could be known as a centre of excellence in waste glass.
The suggestion was made at a Wanganui District Council meeting on Wednesday, when councillors approved preliminary work on a resource recovery centre where the public can bring their waste for reusing, recycling or composting. Council hopes to go into partnership with local businesses to form the centre.
Louisa Palmer of Palmerston North-based Waste Connections did a presentation on the possibility of Wanganui establishing a resource recovery centre. Ms Palmer also wrote a feasibility study on the same issue at the request of council's waste minimisation working party.
Ms Palmer said her opinion was that Wanganui could become a centre for the reuse of glass.
"There is 4000 tonnes of glass a year in New Zealand that needs to be dealt with. I think Wanganui could become the centre of glass reusage, just as it is the centre of glass excellence."
