Sharp Corp. has concluded a business tie-up contract with Taiwan´s Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. to mutually supply liquid crystal display panels for television sets, sources close to the matter said Friday.
The Japanese electronics maker and Hon Hai, the world´s largest make-to-order electronics manufacturer, will set up a joint company in the near future to procure components for panel manufacturing, the sources said.
The agreement will further boost Sharp´s collaboration with Taiwanese firms as it already procures LCD panels from Chimei Innolux Corp., a group firm of Hon Hai.
Under the agreement, Sharp is likely to buy LCD panels of around 20 to 30 inches from the Taiwanese company, while supplying Hon Hai with larger sized panels.
The deal will enable Sharp to enhance cost-competitiveness by using Hon Hai´s inexpensive LCD panels in its televisions and expanding sales of large-sized panels, which the Japanese company has been placing emphasis on.
