THE mysterious and wonderful medium of glass wowed visitors at the country’s first glass museum which just opened in Penang.
Among the glass masterpieces was the longest batik motive glass painting in Malaysia.
It took three artists at the iBox Museum of Glass on Mount Erskine Road about five months to complete the painting which is based on the 1Malaysia concept.
It measures 12.2m in length and 1.5m in height.
Altogether, there are hundreds of pieces of glass art at the museum which was established to promote tourism in Penang as well as Malaysia.
Visitors marvelled at quirky keychains, resplendent pendants, chopstick holders, clocks and paintings — all created out of glass.
Museum managing director Bowie Low Kean Boon said the artists who made the batik motive glass painting began their work in May.
“With months of hard work and precise attention to details, we have successfully created the glass art for the enjoyment of visitors,” he said.
He was speaking after the official opening of the museum by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng on Saturday.
The museum has earned two honorable recognitions from the Malaysia Book of Records for being the first glass museum in the country and its creation of the longest batik motive glass painting.
Lim said the hard work of the board of directors of Ibox Design Sdn Bhd which owned the museum had helped to support the state’s tourism industry and generate new jobs for Penangites.
“The innovation of glass batik art has opened up a new era in this field,” he said.
The museum (04-8991080) is open from 9.30am to 6pm daily except Sundays. Admission is free.
