The 1 World Trade Center base has a new design that includes glass. According to Crain's New York, the concrete base of the tower will be clad in glass louvers that are set at different angles on the base and lit from behind.
Steve Coleman in the media relations department at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said bidding for the job is still ongoing, and declined to comment on the glass design. Liz Kubany of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) in New York would not confirm or deny the design. SOM is working on the new design of the podium.
However, a source related to the project who requested to remain unnamed because the Port Authority has not announced the contract, confirmed the new design and said that Permasteelisa, with U.S. headquarters in Windsor, Conn., was awarded the contract.
A Permasteelisa employee declined to confirm the contract.
The base of 1 WTC was originally slated to include prismatic glass, but in May that plan was abandoned. Click here to read the related article in the October issue of USGlass Magazine.
