Construction Employment Up in June, Nonresidential Starts Down

June presented mixed construction reports, according to the July 19 edition of Data DIGest, from the Associated General Contractors of America.

Construction employment was up in June from the previous year in 36 states, and down in 14 states and Washington, D.C., according to the AGC. Wyoming, Louisiana and Arizona experienced the largest percentage gains in construction jobs year-over-year, while California, Texas and Florida added the most new construction jobs during the last 12 months, according to the report.

Despite the overall employment gains, the value of nonresidential construction starts fell 20 percent in June, year-over-year, according to Reed Construction Data, as reported in Data DIGest. Looking at building segments for the January to June period, institutional building starts were down 20 percent, with education and health care showing loses. On the positive side, retail construction was up 5.7 percent during the period, and private office was up 2.9 percent, according to Data DIGest.
