Global supplier of glass fiber reinforcements for composite solutions, Owens Corning has introduced a new non-woven glass fiber veil at the 2011 JEC Composites Show.
The new product utilizes Advantex E-CR glass technology and will assist battery manufacturers to tackle the issues of stop-start engine technology. It improves the operating life of conventional flooded lead-acid batteries, especially at incomplete state of discharge. It makes batteries to function at high temperature conditions and minimizes acid stratification.
The non-woven glass fiber veil can be applied straightaway to the positive electrode’s face during battery production, enhancing the battery’s potential to meet the demands of the stop-start engine systems. The new technology eradicates a battery part by substituting sacrificial pasting paper, which is utilized as a process carrier in the electrode pasting procedure. Battery producers do not require any capital investment when using the glass veil technology.
The glass veil technology offers cost benefits to absorbed glass mat batteries, which are costly and more sensitive to heat. Stop-start engine systems reduce fuel usage and carbon emissions by shutting off the engine temporarily during idling such as railroad crossings and traffic signals. The system can be used in service and delivery vehicles, which make frequent stops.
