When Martina Boger moved to Painted Post from Germany three years ago, one of the first things she fell in love with was the Corning Museum of Glass.
In fact, Boger enjoyed visiting the museum so much that she became a docent.
Despite her many visits to the museum, Boger said she still manages to discover something different each time.
"I like glass to drink from and I like glass to look through. I like beautiful windows, but I never thought about a glass museum in my life," Boger said. "When I first came in here, I was totally surprised."
Boger was among hundreds who took advantage of free admission Thursday as the museum held an open house to celebrate its 60th anniversary.
The Corning Museum of Glass, a gift to the community from Corning Glass Works, now Corning Inc., opened its doors May 19, 1951.
The museum -- one of the biggest tourist attractions in New York state -- has held events all year to celebrate its anniversary.
Meghan Baker of Painted Post, who is going to college in Montana, brought her friend Mike Livers back from the Big Sky state to tour her favorite museum.
"I'm very impressed. I heard (Baker) talk about it before," Livers said. "I wasn't expecting artifacts and historical perspective. This is very impressive."
Former Corning resident Marie Blouin brought her husband, David, a Harrisburg-area native, and their two young children to Thursday's open house to experience the museum she grew up with.
"We used to go here every year in school," Marie Blouin said. "I appreciate it a lot more now.
