Fire resistant safety glass manufacturer CGI International has provided a fire safe recovery for patients at the NHS’s £230m new-build Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury.
CGI International supplied more than 130 pieces of 30/30 and 60/60 full integrity and insulation glass, toughened glass and highline special and laminated float glass, to specialist fire door manufacturer TDSL.
Mansfield-based TDSL secured the contract to install all the hospital’s internal fire doorsets, ironmongery and fire rated screens. The total order comprised over 140m² and was installed over a three month period.
The new Tunbridge Wells Hospital will provide all inpatient accommodation in single en-suite bedrooms; making it the first NHS acute hospital of its kind in the UK. Construction of the new hospital began in 2008 and will become fully operational in September 2011.
Ash Malhan, TDSL CEO, said: “This was a key project for TDSL and saw us work on one of the UK’s biggest and most significant new build hospital developments in recent times.
“Achieving the necessary fire safety standards was of paramount importance with this job but so too was the need for some level of acoustic control. This is a particularly key element of patient care so we worked closely with CGI’s technical team to ensure the optimum level of sound-proofing and fire safety, within budget and on-time.”
Steve Goodburn, sales director for CGI International, said: “We have a very long-standing relationship with TDSL and the Tunbridge Wells Hospital is the latest project to combine our technical advice and product range with TDSL’s installation expertise.”
Part of the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, the new seven-storey hospital covers the equivalent of 13 football pitches and will provide a range of services including an emergency centre, orthopedics, a dedicated women's and children's centre – which opened in January - day case theatres and outpatient services.
