Leybold Optics GmbH of Alzenau/Germany split its current product portfolio into two independent business units: Optics and Glass & Solar, according to an August 11 release.

Patrick Binkowska will manage the Glass & Solar division. He has extensive experience in the photovoltaic field, and previously held the position of head of unit photovoltaic at Singulus Technologies AG. He will be assisted by Patrick Candala, director sales and marketing division, Glass & Solar, and Holger Richert, director sales and marketing division, Glass & Solar/Glass Coating.

The portfolio of the Glass & Solar division contains vacuum systems for the photovoltaic industry for thin film systems (a-Si/μc-Si, CIGS, CIGS-Flex, CdTe) and machines for architectural glass coating, displays and other large-area applications. Leybold Optics also is simplifying the technology transfer in the thin-film field “Research & Development to Production.” Modular lab systems, which are technologically identical to and have the same process sequences as the large production systems, only differ in terms of the format of the substrate materials. Results from the “small” laboratory systems can be simply transferred to new or existing production lines.

Antonio Requena, with more than 20 years of international experience for Leybold Optics, will serve as the managing director of the Optics Division for marketing the deposition systems for precision optics, ophthalmic lens coating, the automotive and the electronics industry.

“Establishing the Glass & Solar division reflects the higher priority we are giving to photovoltaic within our company,” said Kurt Håkansson, CEO, in the release. “By means of the continuous innovative further development of our technologies in the thin film and architecture glass fields, Leybold Optics is making an important contribution to improving our living conditions and protecting natural resources; also, the high quality products are contributing to sustainability within our society.”
