In the glue-chipping process, the glue-to-water ratio creates the pattern upon the glass surface. The standard recipe calls for a 2:1 ratio, with two parts water for one part glue. And, you should use only animal-hide glue or specific glass-chipping glue
Function
As it dries, the hot glue contracts and grips the glass surface. Heating the glass with a space heater or, even, sunlight causes the dried glue to pop and crack, leaving behind chipped glass.
Considerations
Before chipping, rough the glass surface, which allows the glue to grip the glass. The preferred method is sandblasting.
Use
You can glue chip clear, colored or flashed glass, including such items as windows, bottles, jars, signs or, even, mirrors.
Warning
Heating the glass too much causes it to crack. Also, the cracking glue can chip off with considerable force, so always wear protective goggles. Always handle the glass with caution during the entire process, and be careful around glass shards.
