Next year, the average thickness of LCD panels used in smart phones and tablet PCs is going to be reduced down to 0.3mm. At present, the figure stands at approximately 0.5mm.
If the slimmer glass substrate is applied to the Galaxy S2, the newest flagship smart phone of Samsung Electronics, the product thickness can decrease by 0.4mm to 8.5mm. Though smart phone and tablet PC manufacturers are having the devil’s own time cutting the depths of their handhelds, products as thin as eight millimeters or less seem to be available next year thanks to the new board.
Currently, Samsung Corning Precision Materials is working on a glass substrate as slim as three-tenths of a millimeter. The super-slim glass substrate is for fifth-generation -- 1,100mm×1,250mm -- or more advanced display panels.
The substrate, consisting of one color filter and one thin film transistor, can reduce the thickness and weight of an LCD panel by 40% or so, respectively.
